Abstract

Several cardiovascular diseases are accompanied by changes on cardiac morphology and function, which may result in heart failure as well as in sudden death. The finding that the high fat diet may also result in cardiovascular pathologies emerged in the last years, and some researchers are dedicated to elucidate the biological mechanisms that contribute to this process, mainly due to the increasing prevalence of obesity in developed and emerging countries.Moreover, studies developed in the last decade demonstrated that changes on the pattern of gene expression, influenced by several environmental factors to which individuals are constantly exposed, provides an important contribution in the etiology of various diseases. In this sense, micro RNAs (miRNA) are considered mechanisms extremely important for post-transcriptional gene expression regulation, and some of these molecules are involved directly in the cardiovascular alterations evidenced in some experimental models. However, until this moment, it is not clear whether the high fat diet is able to modulate the miRNA expression pattern in the cardiac tissue. Considering that the high fat diet is able to induce several changes in the cardiac morphology and function, and that the expression of miRNAs is modulated in some pathologies that affect the cardiovascular system, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of the high fat diet in the miRNA expression pattern in the cardiac tissue.
