High resolution climate record for the last climatic cycle in the subtropical SW Atlantic

Abstract

The study site KF-12, retrieved in the SW Atlantic (Brazilian Margin) is proposed to carry out the reconstruction of sea-surface and deep ocean conditions during the last climate cycle in a region with deep and bottom waters influenced both by north and south dynamics. The main objective is to obtain several climate parameters to have a continuous record that can be used to identify climatic events with sub-millennial frequencies previously observed in other oceanic provinces and latitudes, as well as in continental ice-cores, to analyze the degree of synchronicity and the relationship existing between hemispheres and/or other regional processes and their correspondence with critical climatic parameters like the CO2 concentration. For these goals it is planned the study of different micropaleontological groups, together other biogeochemical techniques. A robust age-model is available for the proposed site, previously developed for the applicant team. A detailed analysis of the microfossil assemblages will permit to apply for statistical techniques to obtain paleotemperatures, as well new paleoproductivity proxies (AU)
