Abstract

Through the analysis of some track features induced in etched detectors as their spatial distributions, angles of incidence, geometric parameters and overlapping, the response of LR-115 detectors inside diffusion chambers (type cup monitors) is evaluated. An attempt will be made to correlate these characteristics with the geometry of diffusion chambers and detector location. The constancy of detector efficiency will be evaluated. The quality of radon concentration measurements will be evaluated based on criteria of reliability, accuracy and precision of results. Experiments will be conducted to relate the geometric track parameters with incident angles and energies. Based on experimental results of track parameters and their distributions, or with the use of alternative procedures, the ability to individually calibrate (auto-calibration) LR-115 detectors will be evaluated. From the theoretical basis of the response of LR-115 detectors facing hemispherical surfaces, it is expected to design and build a device to measure the airborne concentrations of radon, thoron and their a-emitter progenies. These studies will increase knowledge about the performance of LR-115 detectors in diffusion chambers, which in principle can be extended to other types of detectors in different geometric configurations. It is proposed to evaluate a semi-empirical alternative method to calculate the radionuclide concentrations in environmental samples using high-resolution gamma spectroscopy. Publications and projects with professors and students are planned, as well as teaching a postgraduate course. It is expected to propose collaborative projects between the involved institutions, Brazil and Venezuela. (AU)
