In vitro evaluation of roughness and color stability of artificial teeth submitted to brushing and immersion in beverages

Abstract

Acrylic resin artificial teeth are commonly used in the manufacture of removable partial or complete dentures. The abrasion caused by brushing may result in increased roughness of artificial teeth, facilitating the biofilm accumulation, and may still be associated with increased deposition of dyes from beverages, resulting in staining of teeth and aesthetic damage. This study will evaluate the effect of brushing and soaking in drinks on surface roughness and color stability of two types of acrylic resin teeth. The specimens correspond to upper central incisors of two types of artificial acrylic resin teeth (Biotone and Biotone IPN, Dentsply Ind. Com Ltda. Petrópolis - RJ, Brazil). The artificial teeth will be divided into two study sequences, that for each type of tooth, half of the sample will be subjected to brushing and then immersion in beverages and the other half will be subject only to immersion in beverages. Roughness and color stability evaluation will be conducted on separate occasions: T0 (before treatment), T1 (after brushing) and T2 (after immersion in beverages). For brushing evaluation, 11,000 brushing cycles will be conducted in brushing machine, simulating a period of one year, and for the evaluation of color stability specimens will be immersed in instant coffee, cola and distilled water (control) for 12 days, simulating one year of consumption. Color variations will be captured by a spectrophotometer, and roughness analyzed through a digital profilometer. Data will be submitted to appropriate statistical tests, according to the adherence to normality, considering a significance level of 5%. (AU)
