Effects of intermittent hemodialysis in early stage of chronic kidney disease on clinical and laboratory profile of dogs served in service medical clinic of small animals FMVZ-UNESP, Botucatu

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common alteration in the clinic of small animals with high sample which is characterized as irreversible damage to the nephrons. In recent years many advances have been made successfully on therapeutic patient nephropathy. The intermittent hemodialysis (HDI) is an extracorporeal renal replacement therapy that helps in delaying the progression of CKD. The aim of this project is to evaluate the effect of intermittent hemodialysis, instituted in the early stage of CKD, aiming to provide a better quality of life and prolongation of it, compared to animals with CKD managed only clinical treatment without dialysis. Will be used 30 dogs, after having stage III CKD criteria for inclusion and exclusion, of both sexes, of various ages and breeds, weighing between 15-30 pounds. The animals are divided into group I (Clinical Treatment): composed of dogs with CKD III, undergoing medical treatment, twice a week, until the urea values are below 70 mg/dL and group II (Intermittent Hemodialysis): consists of dogs with CKD III subjected, in addition to medical treatment, the dialysis with intermittent hemodialysis, twice per week, the first session of two hours, and from the second to last 3 hours until the BUN levels are below 70 mg/dL. Will be analyzed and controlled the possible complications in the two groups. The animals will undergo clinical and laboratory evaluation. Will be held four blood samples. In group I, two samples will be conducted with one performed before the clinical treatment, and the other end thereof. In group II, before the start of HDI, the second 60 minutes after the start of HDI, the third crop 120 minutes after the start of treatment, and the fourth and final harvest 60 minutes after the end of treatment.
