Abstract

The Oleaceae family includes 25 genera and about 600 species, with nearly cosmopolitan distribution. In the Neotropics the family comprises nine genera and over 45 described species. The species are characterized by woody habit, leaves usually opposite, not stipulated, simple or compound, cimose inflorescences, actinomorphic flowers, calyx (0) 4-15-lobed, corolla (0) 4-12-lobed, simpetalous, stamens 2 (4), filaments attached to the base of the corolla tube, bicarpelar gynoecium, ovary superior, 2-locular, two axillary ovules per locule; fruit capsular, winged, berry or drupe, seed 1, embryo with two cotyledons, endosperm abundant or almost absent. There is not a monograph of the family for Neotropics, the Brazilian species have never been the subject of taxonomic study, the 'Flora brasiliense' was the last national approach citing only 11 species, while the recent list of 'Species of Flora of Brazil' cites 17 species, two which described in the last six years. Published floristic studies only partially portray the diversity of family, the herbarium records indicate a deficiency in collection efforts, underestimating the diversity of the taxon for the Central and South America, including the Brazilian territory. The lack of active specialists in Oleaceae, the possibility of expanding the list of species of the family, expansion of the collections of national herbaria and the expectation to find species not yet described by science, motivated the development of this project, which aims to conduct the taxonomic review of Oleaceae, thus enabling the preparation of a monograph for the 'Flora Neotropica'.
