Abstract

Overweight and obesity prevalence provided by fat accumulation has increased worldwide and has been considered harmful for individuals health status, increasing the number of morbidity and mortality. Dysfunctions such as hypertension, type II diabetes, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease are often seen in people with overweight and obesity (Lavie et al, 2009). The increase in sedentary lifestyle associated with poor eating habits, stress and sleep deprivation are characteristic of modern society and that help promote a positive energy balance, causing overweight and obesity (Siervo et al, 2009). Obesity is a public health problem and the use of nonpharmacologic therapies (nutritional counseling and physical activity programs) has been widely encouraged. The existing therapy programs present several difficulties, such as low level of adherence and joint overload. Pilates, developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, by observing the movements of the human body and its natural functioning, and defined as the balance of body and mind through awareness gained control of all movements of the body (Gallagher, Kryzanowska , 2000), may be an alternative physical activity program for obesity treatment that will minimize the difficulties observed in traditional programs. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the effects of walking (established treatment for obesity) and Pilates training on the physiological and health parameters and quality of life in obesity and overweight people.
