Abstract

Soybean [Glycine max L. (Merrill)] is considered a commodity, with high yield and great participation in Brazilian exports. However, pest attack may reduce a significant portion of the production. The silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) has become an important pest for soybean due to raising infestation levels and difficulty of its management. Whitefly's control is achieved through massive applications of synthetic insecticides, favoring the selection of resistant individuals. Thus, it is important to evaluate less aggressive alternatives, aligned to concepts of integrated pest management. The use of resistant cultivars is a valuable strategy within the IPM, reducing the pest population below the economic injury level without environmental or social damages. Ten soybean genotypes will be assessed to attack of B. tabaci biotype B, in order to characterize types of resistance. Initially, these materials will be evaluated for antixenosis (free and no-choice tests). The insect colonization on the genotypes and the effect of trichomes will also be investigated. With selected genotypes, new tests on biological performance will be conducted aiming to verify the occurrence of antibiosis. Details of insect's feeding on these materials will be assessed by EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph) analysis in order to compare whitefly's behavior on resistant and susceptible genotypes. Finally, tolerance tests will be performed (genotypes under different levels of insect infestation) along with analyzes of protein and enzyme contents to correlate with the yield results. (AU)
