Abstract

The incessant search for alternative energy sources has awakened the interest of various research groups in the entire world. Among the several renewable energy sources, the solar energy has been highlighted due to its great expansion capacity, being a promising renewable and sustainable energy source. Based on this idea, the development of organic dye-sensitized solar cells is receiving great attention on the scientific world, since it is based on devices that present a low cost for their production and present a good efficiency in the solar to electric energy conversion. Because of this, the synthetic organic chemistry arises as an excellent tool for developing dye-sensitized solar cells, enabling the synthesis of new types of dyes and through structural modifications in organic dyes already in use, the potentiation of the dyes in the solar to electric energy conversion. Therefore, in this Project we propose to study the obtainment of different coumarin and quinoline derivatives through multicomponent reactions promoted by the niobium pentachloride (NbCl5), verifying the effects of concentration of NbCl5 in the reaction time and in the product yields. After the preparation of the coumarin and quinoline derivatives, they will be analyzed by structural, photochemical and photophysical characterization, so that we can enable its use as sensitizing dyes on Grätzel photoeletrochemical devices. We intend to verify the effects of substituents, being them electron donating or withdrawing groups, in the yield and proportion of the products formed, in the reaction time and in the physical and chemical properties of the products formed. The coumarin and quinoline derivatives that present good results in the optical, thermal and fluorescence characterization will be submitted to evaluation in Grätzel devices, to assess their applicability in solar to electric energy conversion.
