Evaluation of the infection of birds and hard ticks by Flavivirus and Rickettsias of regional healthy importance

Abstract

The diseases caused by Flavivirus (Flaviviridae) and bacteria ofthe genus Rickettsia have emerged and/or remerged in the planet, including in South America. Within this arbovirus and Rickettsia context, there is a gap of information related to existing interactions between virus and Rickettsia with their tick vectors in Argentina and Brazil. Therefore, the present proposal aims to evaluate the role of ixodid ticks of the genus Amblyomma as vectors of Flavivirus, Bunyavirus and Rickettsia of regional health importance in Argentina and Brazil, and the infection of wild birds by these agents. Considering that the Brazilian laboratory of this proposal has the study of Rickettsias as its main research line, and that the Argentinean laboratory has the study of Arbovirus as its main research line, this proposal was formulated under a bilateral perspective, in which Arbovirus researchers can be trained in Rickettsia, and vice-versa. Thus, it is expected that not only a scientific contribution for a betler knowledge of these infectious agents will be gained, but also a stronger scientific interaction that shall continue in subsequent collaborative studies after the conclusion of the present project.
