Abstract

This proposal aims at the inclusion of Dr. Carlos Frederico Gurgel Deluqui from the University of Adelaide, Australia, as a Visiting Researcher at the Laboratory of Marine Algae (LAM). Dr Gurgel is a specialist in molecular systematics of marine algae, having extensive experience in phycology, including traditional taxonomy approaches, as well as the use of molecular data and phylogeny, and specializes in Gracilariales, a group including species of great economic importance, but with difficult taxonomy which has been the focus of studies in our research group. Among the scientific activities proposed are the studies of the diversity and phylogeny of groups of marine macroalgae of both ecological and economic importance. Molecular markers will be used to analyze thousands of samples collected extensively on the coast of Brazil and Australia to better understand the species diversity and their biogeographic affinities. Among his major contributions to projects developed in LAM, is the application of new methods for the analysis of molecular data, such as the optimization of gene partitioning in multiple alignments of molecular markers and analysis of macro and micro-evolutionary processes.
