Abstract

The use of insecticides for pest control in indoor environments of buildings in urban areas has become a common practice. Currently, the most widely used insecticides are the pyrethroids, which have low acute toxicity to man, but that as well as being potentially carcinogenic and allergenic and endocrine disruptors, can persist on the surface and dust of indoor environments for long periods of time. The objectives of this study are a) evaluate the persistence of pyrethroid insecticides on surfaces and in dust indoors, in controlled laboratory conditions and b) evaluate the persistence of a pyrethroid insecticide in surface and dust indoors, simulating conditions of a residence. In the controlled conditions study, the insecticides permethrin, cypermethrin and cyfluthrin will be applied in aluminum foil and dust samples and periodically for 60 days, will be extracted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography to quantify the active ingredients. The product formulated for professional use of the insecticide that have greater persistence in the study in controlled conditions will be pulverized in a test house simulating a residence; periodically for 60 days, the active ingredient will be extracted from surfaces and dust and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography for quantification of the active ingredient.
