Abstract

The theme of this research project is the analytic, numeric and experimental study of the seakeeping behavior of high performance ships (high speed). Two research centers, the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of the Engineering School of São Paulo University ant the Transport Division of the Institute of Technological Research (IPT), are involved in this effort with the support of the Brazilian Navy with a similar project. It is important to notice that the research on high performance (high speed) ships is receiving, by the international community, special attention on the grounds of the new economic perspectives available for cargo transport (maritime and coastal) and for the tourism and recreational industry. The proposed research plan is a broad spectrum and long term one which has as main objectives, the development of different tools for the analysis of seakeeping for displacement or semi-planing monohulls, that is, motion and acceleration levels, the slamming forces, deckwetness and added resistance, comparison with experimental towing tank, radio-controlled models and prototype ships results and, finally, to suggest some criteria for the preliminary design of monohulls. This project intends also to extend the technological knowledge on the design of high speed ships, improve the experimental techniques employed and enable the gatherness of a critical mass of engineers and specialists. Besides, it will make possible to develop, at undergraduate and graduate levels, special courses on design techniques for high speed ships. (AU)
