Abstract

Toxic metals cause damage to health and the environment and are used in a wide variety of industrial processes which may cause pollution of water resources due to the disposal of industrial waste. In this project the biosorption of toxic metals using different bioadsorbent as the residue from the extraction of alginate from the seaweed Sargassum filipendula will be studied by adsorption essays in batch and in fixed bed column. The residue of the extraction of alginate has not yet been explored as adsorbent and has great potential for this use in view of the proven effectiveness of seaweed Sargassum filipendula as adsorbent for toxic metals, and commercial application of alginate extracted into pharmaceutical and food industry as a thickener and gelling. The residue from the extraction and the alginate will be characterized to better understand their composition and adsorption characteristics. The techniques of scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, blocking functional groups and potentiometric titration, among others, will be employed. 13C nuclear magnetic resonance will be used to assess the relationship between uronic acids (manuronic and guluronic - M / L) of alginate. The essays involve the kinetic and equilibrium study and in mono and multi-component adsorption column. (AU)
