Considering that the advance of nanotechnology and the absence of specific regulations for the disposal of nanoparticles (NPs) it is necessary to know the toxicity of NPs to aquatic biota. The effects of NPs of titanium dioxide (TiO2-NP) have been described in mammals, but there are few studies in aquatic organisms. The curimbatá, Prochilodus lineatus (Teleostei) is a potential bioindicator species in the southeast of Brazil, it has detritivorous feeding habits exposing the fish to pollutants in water and in the sediment of aquatic systems being an excellent model for aquatic contamination studies and, in addition, this species has high commercial values. The goal of this study is to determine the lethal concentration (50%) to TiO2-NPs and evaluate the responses of different organs of P. lineatus to TiO2-NPs using genotoxic, biochemical (enzymes associated to ion regulation, biotransformation and antioxidants), physiological and morphological biomarkers after acute (48h) and chronic (14 d) subletal exposure. These assays will provide support for understanding the action mechanisms of TiO2-NPs as well as for the recognition of water bodies contamination by this NPs and about dietary risk with the consumption of fish exposed to it.
