Infra FAPESP FINEP: strengthening the infraestructure of analysis via microscopy at Universidade de São Paulo, campus São Carlos

Abstract

The system of image acquisition system CRAIC microspectrophotometer PV 20/30 is an advanced microscopy with image acquisition, working in a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, namely, from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared. It is possible to acquire images in mode of transmission, reflectance and epifluorescence. Simultaneously, it has the ability to perform the chemical and optical characterization of the materials, tissue or organism, via micro-spectroscopy Ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-VIS-NIR). One of the most common applications of microscopy using reflected UV radiation corresponds to the investigations of surfaces of various materiais looking roughness, (miero) fraetures, impurities or coatings. UV radiation undergoes greater spread than the visible radiation, thus making possible to observe details or defeets on the surface morphology. This characteristic allows its using in this mode to monitor processes, as the biocompatibilization in abone implant, performed using bioglass or biopolymer, just to mention a few examples. Additionally, the microspectroscopy can be applied in the investigations on high and low molecular weight molecules, using small amounts of samples, corresponding to an important additional tool in studies sueh as synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology.
