Abstract
This study presents the organization procedures of the politeness strategies manifested in the occurrence of the discourse markers pues, ya and clear, in oral interventions of teenagers from two capital cities, Madrid and Santiago de Chile, present in corpus de language Adolescent (J0RGENSEN et. al., 2010). As a result, contrasts between samples of those two varieties of Spanish language were described. I has been proved that politeness presents particularities and possesses a relative value according to the verbal interaction, cultural traits and the type of social relation between interlocutors. As for pues, the argumentative function present in the corpus of Madrid was not found in the chilean corpus; as a modal marker, pues occurs in booth materials of analysis; however, in-the chilean samples, pues (po) can soften an assertion, value the speaker's intention and give more strength to the illocutionary act. In the corpus of Madrid, clear, as a moralizer, can reveal a rhetorical mechanism that enables the production of an objection without being a face-threatening act; it may also occur as a formulator; in the chilean samples, on the other hand, only the role of modalizer was identified for clear, which can constitute phatic speech and express face-flattering politeness. Finally, the marker ya has proved to be more polyfunctional in the Chilean corpus, with functions such as argumentation, discourse goal, modalizer and contact control, in contrast with the argumentative and discursive goal functions of Madrid’s corpus.
