Polymeric materials of low environmental impact

Abstract

The environmental impact caused by the siposal of polymeric materiais is modern world reality and constitutes a chalenge to materiais researchers to find new ways to deal with reducing this impact. This project aims to develop strategies to reach this goal: increase the photodegradability of plastic film packagings, substitute non¬biodegradable reinforcing agents for vegetal fibers, use post-consumer plastic materiais to obtain highly valued products and to develop blends contaning biodegradable polymers. Our laboratories are well equiped to work with polymers, however we do not have a modern co-rotatory double screw intermeshing extruder which can be configured to different processing conditions and containing a side-feeder. With this equipment we will be able to develop those projects and to attain the desired goals. (AU)
