Abstract

It will study the possibility of reusing treated domestic wastewater, yet containing pharmaceutical and endocrine disruptors residues, for irrigation and aquaculture. A low-cost, highly-efficient advanced oxidation process (solar photo-Fenton) is chosen for this purpose. A parabolic compound reactor (CPC, Compound Parabolic Concentrator) will be used for that process. An analytical method for the micropollutants identification and quantification, employing SPE, GC-MS or LC-MS, will be developed and validated; degradation will be optimized by experimental designs (factorial and central composite ones); micropollutants inactivation will also be assessed, based on ecotoxicological tests (Lactuca sativa, Allium cepa, Daphnia similis and Danio rerio), estrogenic activity tests (VTG and MCF-7 cells) and antimicrobial activity (Enterococcus fæcalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas æruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and/or Candida albicans). As the sole capital expenditure, a Shimadzu TOC-LCPH carbon analyzer is requested. It is expected that the proposed treatment enables the safe reuse of treated domestic wastewater in irrigation and aquaculture. (AU)
