Abstract

Patellar tendinopathy is a common musculoskeletal dysfunction in athletes and it is considered an important cause for physical disability. Several factors, local and distal to the knee joint, have been related to patellar tendinopathy. However, less attention has been given to verify alterations in the trunk and hip movements in subjects with this dysfunction. Moreover, it is not clear if subjects with patellar tendinopathy present strength deficits or muscle recruitment impairments in the hip and knee muscles in comparison to healthy subjects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the hip and knee isometric torque and the muscle activation and kinematics of the trunk and lower limb during stop-jumps between subjects with patellar tendinopathy, asymptomatic subjects with patellar tendon ultrasonographic abnormality and healthy controls. Thirty volunteers will be recruited for this study divided into 3 groups: group of subjects with patellar tendinopathy (n=10), group of asymptomatic subjects with patellar tendon ultrasonographic abnormality (n=10) and group of healthy subjects (n=10). The kinematic and electromyographic evaluations will be carried out with the Vicon (Vicon Motion Systems Ltd, Oxford) and Trigno" Wireless EMG (Delsys Inc., Boston, USA) systems, respectively. For measuring hip and knee isometric torque, the Lafayette Manual Muscle Test System (Lafayette Instruments, Lafayette, USA) will be used. For statistical analysis, group comparisons will be carried out with an analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA). The Bonferroni test will be conducted as a follow-up test for the identification of specific differences (alpha = 0,05). (AU)
