Development and first psychometric parameters from battery of musical perception skills (AHPM)for children from elementary school

Abstract

The study of music perception has been expanding into areas of knowledge that transcend the musical area in itself, for example, psychology, psychobiology, and neuroscience. However, there are few available tool which are validated and with good psychometric indices and theoretical based. The musical perception allows to explore several neural functions, being showed as a predictor of several verbal skills, such as reading ability. Battery Assessment Skills Musical Perception (BAHPM) was inspired by the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA). The former consists of only 75 items that were thought to embrace, on contrary to MBEA, seven areas of music perception in a broad way concerning seven domains: rhythmic, duration, intensity, timbre, contour, scale and metric. It is proposed in this project to study the underlying latent structure BAHPM exploring the characteristic of music perception in itself (either dimensional , categorical or mixed), the invariance of the model and the parameters of difficulty and discrimination for each of the 75 items. Given statistical analysis to be employed - the item response theory (IRT) - 1200 children, from elementary school, will be selected randomly from São Paulo city following a stratified sampling considering the proportion of type of schools (state, municipal, private). It is expected to obtain a tool for assessment of music perception faster than the MBEA, in an interdisciplinary way, and with national technology allowing the partnership between music and neurosciences. Moreover, the process of evaluating of 75 items, per se, will explore how the phenomenon of music perception is perceived by children. (AU)
