Abstract

The dissemination of project management practices has grown, driven by the adoption of reference guides (bodies of knowledge - BoKs). In these guides, special attention is given to project risk management. However, several studies indicate that project risk management has great gap between theory and practice in organizations. The prescriptive characteristics of the project management discipline in general, and risk management in particular, result in a series of problems. This more prescriptive approach of risk management, present in BoKs, generally neglects the uncertainty management in projects. The relationship between risk management and project success has been studied, and yield some controversial results. These differences in results may be explained by the contingency approach, in which the type of project can affect both the project performance and the effectiveness of project management practices. Another explanation for the contradictory results is that the studies focus on risk management, neglecting relevant aspects in uncertainty management, such as the soft skills of the project stakeholders. In this context, the present study aims to elucidate the effect of risk and uncertainty management in project performance, combining soft and hard management aspects. Moreover, The contingent approach will be applied, considering the effect of the type of projects and sector. A multi-methods approach will be applied, combining systematic literature review, for constructing the conceptual framework, a survey for model empirical validation, using structural equation modeling and case studies to understand in dept the problem faces by the organization in practice.
