Abstract

The specified atomizer allows the processing of low quantity of material (equivalent to 3kg Fe alloy) which is interesting considering the research purpose, and we will be studying a large number of alloys in various systems. Also the atomizer allows the fusion is made in vacuum or inert atmosphere, which ensures a desired purity in the alloy, as well as permitting the use of atomizing gas that will be used in our project (argon and nitrogen), as well as having also the possibility of using helium, which has the highest thermal conductivity among the inert gases. An important feature is that the gas velocity reaches approximately Mach 2, which leads to the formation of droplets of small size and high cooling rate. This equipment is versatile for atomization of several alloys using different gases, which makes typically a multi-user equipment to those working in research in the areas of powder metallurgy and coatings.
