Abstract
Despite the great advances in the research field of metallic glasses, during the last fifty years, the actual factors governing the glass forming ability of metallic alloys during solidification are still not well understood. The Glass Forming Ability (GFA) of an alloy is dependent not only of an appropriate combination of chemical elements but also of correct stoichiometry. The main objectives of this research project are: i) build selection maps with predictive criteria for metallic glass formation by atomistic dynamics simulations ii) check the effectiveness of such criteria in the selection of metallic glasses, in various metallic systems, starting by the optimization of the most known and studied systems in order to find new alloys, adding new elements or changing the original compositions. The selected chemical compositions will be produced by arc melting and chill casting and the formed alloys tested with well known experimental criteria for evaluation of the GFA. The samples will be characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (DRX) for determination of the amorphous volume and characteristic transformation temperatures. Microstructural characterizations will be performed by optical and electronic microscopy. (AU)
