Abstract

Individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) present high prevalence of dental caries, periodontal disease, self-cleaning intraoral function reduction, presence of oral pathological reflexes and changes in the saliva quantity and quality. Is also reported the lack of understanding and cooperation for the realization of oral hygiene due to possible cognitive deficit, and spasticity presence. This causes stiffness in the masticatory muscles that interferes in the mouth opening. These conditions are considered at risk for developing oral diseases. To date there is no study the literature that evaluated the effect of photobiomodulation in the thickness of the masseter muscles in individuals with spastic CP, assessed by ultrasonography examination. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation in the thickness of spastic masseter muscle. Will be invited to participate 60 children with spastic CP, and 30 children without neurological impairment, aged seven to 14 years. Group 1: It will be composed by 30 children with CP whose caregivers report difficulty in perform oral hygiene due to decreased in mouth opening, difficulty during feeding process and/or oral tissues trauma presence. This group will be evaluated with ultrasonography in first evaluation and after six sessions of photobiostimulation. Group 2 will be composed of 30 children with CP whose caregivers do not report difficulty in perform oral hygiene due to decreased in mouth opening, without difficult during feeding process and oral tissues trauma absence. This group will be evaluated with ultrasonography in the initial evaluation and one week after. Group 3: will be composed of 30 children without neurological impairment, matched for age and sex with 1 and 2 groups and will be evaluated with ultrasonography in the initial evaluation and one week after. Parametric / nonparametric tests will be used depending on the behavior of the variables studied. In all tests, the level of rejection of the null hypothesis will be set at 0.05 (± <5%). (AU)
