Abstract

The influence of functional, behavioral and genetic factors on craniofacial growth is difficult to quantify because of the limited understanding of the interrelationships between these variables. It is well known that occlusion play an important role in the development of their structures, and a normal growth is associated with a normal function. Studies observed significant skeletal asymmetry of the craniofacial structures among young subjects with posterior crossbite, which rarely self-corrects. Once the masticatory muscle function is related to skeletal growth and development, the knowledge of the normal dentofacial pattern, as well as the recognition of alterations and the known effects of the chosen treatment modality are important to ensure the treatment success and the establishment of an optimal occlusal harmony. Thus, the aim of this study will be to evaluate craniofacial and dental dimensions and the thickness of masseter muscle by lateral and frontal teleradiographs, dental casts and ultrasonographic measurements, respectively, among children in the mixed dentition, aged 7-9 years, both genders, divided in 30 with normal occlusion and 30 with skeletal posterior crossbite. The sexual dimorphism will be verified among those with normal occlusion. The results will be submitted to descriptive statistical analysis, Shapiro-Wilks-W test, Pearson"s correlation test, t-test, logistic regression and linear multiple regression, where appropriate, in order to verify the difference between the skeletal, dental and muscular variables in children with normal occlusion and posterior crossbite, as well as the correlation between the studied variables and co-variables and gender differences. The significance level will set at p0.05. (AU)
