Abstract

This project entitled "The Public as an eminently sociological phenomenon. Problems relating to education, literature and social stratification at the time of Romanticism" was born from my interest about the audience in the nineteenth-century (readership, literary private sphere, public opinion), much discussion was part of my doctoral thesis as the recently completed post-doctorate at the Institute of Language Studies at UNICAMP in the central themes literature, public and "globalization of culture". This work seeks to go deeper in the current question of the public by proposing the following research in three different moments intertwined with each other: a) a theoretical approach of the eminently sociological concept of the audience (readership , literary private sphere, public opinion), starting from the work of two authors involved with this concept: Antonio Candido (1918) and Raymond Williams (1921-1988) ; b) an empirical study of a particular case involving a library and a public school founded by Portuguese immigrants in Rio de Janeiro, between 1858-1888 ; c) analysis of results, presentation of a research methodology and conclusions (general and specific) about the theoretical discussion and a case study. The theoretical and empirical research is part of this larger project that aims to collate the results of the case study analysis (b) with the theoretical research (a), which combined can offer a research methodology and conclusions (c) about literature sociological and education.
