Lexicon and utterance: analysis of verbal lexeme behavior

Abstract

Directed to the understanding of semantic identity of verbal lexemes, this project aims to analyze their role in the process of utterance meaning constitution and the way their semantic organization takes place. It involves the semantic nature of verbal lexemes, whose functional value, according to our theoretical references, focuses on sentence syntax and on utterance constitution, as their identity in the linguistic system is structured by the context interactions in which they take part. This research is of utmost importance for any study that analyzes language behavior and language use. In a theory of enunciative operations, in which we can find dynamic lexical identity patterns, and which encompasses the study of linguistic creativity and creation processes, this study seeks to rebuild language regular patterns that are usually hidden by the extreme semantic plasticity of selected verbal units, which will be analyzed in their various uses. We expected to reveal that, behind their variation and abundance of uses, there is an invariant operative schema, which underpins such variation phenomena. (AU)
