Abstract

The purpose of this research is, in light of the events of 1968, to do a survey about the different stories that emerge in this year´s unique celebrations. In a previous study entitled 1968: dialog is violence - the student movement and the military dictatorship, I rebuilt the main events triggered by the student movement from the record of the mainstream media, the students and the military authorities. Now, I propose an analysis of the media return of 1968, particularly the survey of published articles by the O Estado de S. Paulo and Folha de S. Paulo newspapers and by Veja magazine during the thirty and forty year´s celebrations of 1968. The importance of these journals for this research as well as justified by their great national impact, lies in the fact that in my previous study I thoroughly discussed not only the description of the main student´s episodes in 1968 elaborated by them, as their political positioning which also contributed greatly for the outcome of the broader political context: the enactment of Act 5. Thus, we can draw a comparison between the mainstream media´s report in the heat of the moment with the (new) versions built during 1968´S celebrations over the following decades. To survey the (new) versions about 1968 is indispensable the analysis of the published and conveyed literature during the events organized for its celebration. In the light of critical theory, particularly the Debord and Marcuse´s argument, we seek to analyze if the media´s return is lined by the principles of society of the spectacle in countercurrent of the academic literature or if there´s also in the academic literature characteristics of the society of the spectacle, the cultural industry and the closing of the universe of the phrase.
