Abstract

To permit the visit to Brazil, of Dr. John Walsh, Associated Professor, School of Life Sciences, Univ. Warwick, Wellesbourne, UK, to stimulate the development of cooperative researches between his group and of the applicant (ESALQ/USP) and other similar institutions (Inst. Biologico, Inst. Agronomico Campinas, Unesp-FCA/Botucatu, Embrapa Hortaliças and Univ. Brasilia), on potyviruses of vegetable crops. These researches aim to assess the diversity of these viroses and detect genes for resistance against them, as the basis to create potyvirus resistant varieties of vegetable crops. A tentative program and activities was organized, with the agreement of Dr. Walsh. This will include discussions on the strategies to consolidate such a cooperative program, which will involve Exchange of information’s and personnel (researchers, students). During his stay, Dr. Walsh will give seminars about his Works on graduate programs of the visited institutions. Dr. Walsh is presently the president of the Intl. Working Group on Vegetable and Legume Viruses, and he will invite Brazilian researchers to join this group. (AU)
