Abstract

Dental enamel is characterized by layers of prisms with regularly alternating directions. These successive layers form the Hunter-Schreger Bands (HSB) that appear as dark and light bands when viewed under lateral illumination. We have previously demonstrated that the pattern of HSB is highly variable and unique for each tooth. Thus, the biometric measurements of HSB may be a valuable method for personal identification, since enamel can resist to time and extreme environmental conditions. Although promising the popularization of this method is hindered by technical difficulties in image capture, and processing. The aim of the present project is to optimize the conditions for obtaining of HSB in teeth in the mouth of human individuals, and start a database of HSB aiming human personal identification. (AU)
