Abstract

Today's malaria control efforts are limited by our incomplete understanding of the biology of plasmodium and of the complex relationships between human populations and the multiple species of mosquito and parasite. Despite these knowledge gaps, interest and support for malaria control, eradication, and research has increased greatly over the past decade. This has resulted from appreciation of the huge medical, social, and economic burden that malaria exacts form endemic populations. Recent breakthroughs in drug development (such as artemisinina-based combination treatments), preventive interventions (long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets), and improved diagnosis (rapid diagnostic tests and molecular techniques) have resulted in deployment of new antimalarial tools. The main purpose of this intensive, 10-day course, to be hosted by the University of São Paulo, is to provide a comprehensive look at the cutting edge of the science of malaria eradication, with an intense cross-fertilization between disciplines such as epidemiology, parasite and vector biology, population genetics, immunology and vaccinology. We aim to provide a unique and needed space for malaria eradication scientists and students to share new information and advance the scientific debate. As the field develops and results emerge, so too will the questions which need to be answered. The course faculty will comprise 13 national and 18 international experts’ form-leading instructions. Lectures, workshops, pane I discussions and guided visits to research laboratories will cover a wide range of interdisciplinary topics relevant to malaria control and eradication, from parasite and vector biology to epidemiology and public health.
