Abstract

Conciliating social and economic development with environmental conservation is a major challenge. Strategies for sustainable development are increasingly based on the availability of high quality information and analytical tools. There is a strong demand for quick answers to solve specific problems associated with the occurrence and distribution of biological species, such as invasive or endangered species. Answers will increasingly depend on access to and integration of data from distributed sources and the use of advanced computational tools for analysis, spatial visualization, and building of different scenarios. This project proposes to develop a framework to facilitate the work of scientists in predictive modeling of species distribution. This involves addressing issues concerned with species occurrence and absence data, environmental data, dataset preparation, modeling algorithms, pre and post-analysis, component-based software development, high performance computing, web services, and web and desktop interfaces. Three research institutions of São Paulo State are committed to this project: CRIA (Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental), Escola Politécnica da USP, and INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais).
