Instabilities in electrocatalysis: complex kinetics catalyzed by model Pt surfaces, Au and microelectrodes


The electro-oxidation of small organic molecules is an interesting research field due to their application in converting energy systems like fuel cells. The reactions involve several pathways strongly dependent on factors as applied potential and surface conditions, with the possibility of developing dynamic instabilities. More than an excellent example of self-organization dynamics, instabilities as potential and current oscillations, allow the estimation of kinetic parameter, as activations energy and poisoning surface constant. The present project deals with the comparative study of kinetic instabilities on the electro-oxidation of organic molecules containing one carbon. Model surfaces of Pt(111) and Pt(110) as well polycrystalline Pt and Au will be used as catalyst. The influence of space-temporal patterns on the dynamic will be analyzed comparing macro surfaces with (ultra)microelectrodes. Finally, experiments in several temperatures will allow the estimation of activation energy in conditions near and far from the thermodynamic equilibrium. The project aims also to start the studies in electrocatalysis in nonlinear conditions, managed by the supervisor of this project. The project will be developed in Chemistry Department of Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), in which the supervisor is Adjunct Professor (AU)
