Experimental study and mathematical modeling of the production of styrene-based resins and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis

Abstract

The present research project is part of the initial workplan presented by the author at the time of his admission as a professor in the Escola de Engenharia de Lorena (EEL/USP). This project comprises research activities which are equivalent to two of the six years of the experimental period (Resolution 3533 of 06/22/1989, Chap. III, Section II) defined by the committee of work regime related to the USP professors (CERT). The proposed research project is based on the use of styrene-based resins as catalyst supports. It is intended to synthesize these resins, to modify them chemically (inclusion of active sites) and to test them in a catalyzed reaction. Special attention will be given to the mathematical modeling of the production process of this material. The resins will be produced through the technique of aqueous suspension polymerization and then they will be sulfonated and tested in reactions such as esterification, etherifications and transesterifications. The mathematical model will be based on molar balances, method of moments, numerical fractionation and on simplifying hypotheses such as pseudo-steady state for radicals. The system of differential equations resulting from this approach will be solved by numerical integration through algorithms available in the MATLAB®. (AU)
