Abstract
This project aims to use quantitative study of metamorphic processes to unravel the tectonic evolution of the southern Ribeira Belt, its implications to the history of consolidation of the Western Gondwana supercontinent and to contribute to the scientific knowledge on the development of Precambrian orogens. We will study the relationships between the Embu, Apiaí and Curitiba terranes by quantifying pressure-temperature-time-deformation paths and metamorphic field gradients. These goals should be achieved using the integration of results from the application of several methods: regional and detailed field work, microscopic petrography, microtectonics, mineral chemistry using electron microprobe and scanning electron microscope, geothermobarometry (conventional, multiequilibrium, thermodynamic modeling), fluid inclusion study, geochronology by isotopic (U-Pb in zircon and monazite, Ar-Ar in micas and amphibole) and chemical (U-Th-PbT in monazite and xenotime) methods and major and trace element geochemistry. The integration of petrological and geochronological data of each study unit should enable quantification of thermal regimes, depth of burial, exhumation and cooling rates, as well as time spam of collision, which are essential for the development of geodynamic models of orogenic zones. U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) analyzes in detrital zircon grains from metasedimentary rocks of the Embu Terrane will be conducted to determine their source areas and maximum depositional ages, and to evaluate possible relationships with the evolutionary histories of the Apiaí and Curitiba terranes, which have available detrital zircon age data.
