Abstract

In Brazil, the INCA estimates for the year 2014 a total of 9.200 new cases of thyroid cancer, with an estimated risk of 30 cases per 100,000 women. Also according to the INCA during the last decades in most countries the incidence rates of this type of tumor showed a pattern of slow growth, but continuous (about 1% per year). The commonly used diagnostic thyroid cancer occurs from clinical perception and association of fine needle aspiration and ultrasonography, which have a high number of inconclusive results for several pathologies, clearly demonstrating the need to search for new techniques and technologies diagnosis. Within this context, the study of genetic and molecular profile of thyroid lesions has improved the knowledge of the tumor biology and can be integrated into routine diagnostic in order to benefit the pathological analysis and clinical practice and so lead to advances in treatment of patients with these tumors. In addition, Raman spectroscopy presents as a powerful technique for identification and characterization of thyroid lesions. The reason for this is the fact that its ability to provide molecular information and then allow the perception of early biochemical changes before morphological changes. Considering these aspects, this project aims to study the molecular and biochemical differences of the thyroid gland to normal and tumor tissues, by molecular biology analysis (qRT-PCR) and confocal Raman spectroscopy, respectively, to increase sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis of this carcinoma.
