Abstract

This project aims at the experimental study of electron interaction in a wide energy range (1 - 1000 eV) with volatile organic species whose interaction cross sections are little known or absent in the literature. Experimentally, it is intended to obtain the total cross sections, differential elastic, and ionization cross sections (total and partial) as a function of the energy of incident electron. Among the molecular species to be studied are molecules of biological, environmental and astrochemistry interest, for example, trimethyl phosphate, dimethyl sulfide and formaldehyde, respectively. For the implementation of the project, we are building a high-resolution spectrometer for total cross sections measurements. This equipment is based on the electron energy analysis by time-of-flight spectroscopy and represent a major advance in the instruments available in our laboratory. The measurements of elastic and ionization cross sections will be performed with existing spectrometers, where changes will be introduced to increase the impact energy range and improve the quality of results. The work will be performed at the Electron Scattering Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Federal University of São Carlos. (AU)
