Polypyridynic rhenium(I) complexes: syntheses, investigation of photophysical properties and application as luminescent probes and/or therapeutic agents

Abstract

Rhenium(I) polypyridynic compounds, fac-[Re(CO)3(NN)L]0/+1, have very interesting characteristics to be used as probes of protein, DNA and cells. Among the main characteristics are included: their emissive properties generally attributed to the metal to ligand charge transfer excited state, 3MLCT, with long emission lifetime compared to organic compounds, which increases the sensitivity of detection when using time-resolved techniques; the possibility to modulate the properties according to the ligand used, among others. This project aims to synthesize and characterize rhenium(I) compounds with NN ligands with donor electron groups and L ligands and investigate the photochemical and photophysical properties to rationalize the effect of new ligands in these properties. Another objective concerns the determination of the emission lifetimes that will allow further rationalization of the substituents effect on 1,10-phenanthroline and the L ligands, which enhance the emission quantum yields, in the deactivation of the excited state. Thus, it can be possible to modulate the compound characteristics to develop and improve probes for biomolecules and/or to be used as therapeutic agents. Additionally, after complete characterization and study of the photophysical properties in solution, investigations can be performed using different cells such as breast cancer (MCF-7 and MCF-10a), blood cancer (leukemia), among others.
