Abstract

The treatment plants of sewage and industrial effluents may have by conception the use of anaerobic reactors for the biological treatment of liquid waste. This treatment produces biogas, consisting of methane, carbon dioxide and traces of other gases such as H2S. Currently, the H2S control is carried out by physico-chemical technologies; however, these methods have high operating costs. A viable alternative is the use of the biotechnology that not requires catalysts, oxidizing agents and has low energy consumption. This project proposes the use of anoxic biotrickling filter for biodesulphurization of the biogas produced in the UASB reactor (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) installed at the Wastewater Treatment Plant of a Brewing Industry (Araraquara- SP). This research includes laboratory scale experiments to study new packing materials, suitable for microorganism immobilization and their effective application in an anoxic biotrickling filter (3L) for optimization of operational parameters. Also, it will be designed and implemented an anoxic biotrickling filter in pilot scale, packed with open pore polyurethane foam as packing material. This material was previously studied, but is not manufactured in Brazil. The experiments in pilot scale will allow the advance of the biodesulphurization study and characterization of the operational parameters more appropriate for efficient H2S removal from biogas. Therefore, the aim of this project is the effective applicability of this technology and the study of new packing materials, from national source. (AU)
