Abstract

The scientific importance of fluorides (F) is well recognised; they have a fundamental role in achieving and maintaining oral health and F status is of nutritional and public health significance. The use of fluoridated water one of the most important public health measures world-wide which has resulted in dramatic reductions of dental caries. Community water fluoridation schemes commenced in the early 1960's in parts of the UK and now approximately 10% of the UK's population receives fluoridated water adjusted to a target concentration of 1 ppm F. In contrast, in the State of São Paulo (Brazil) water fluoridation schemes have been in place since the early 1970S and they now reach 90% of the population. Aims of the SPRINT proposal: to promote the engagement of researchers from Newcastle and Teesside Universities, UK with those from University of Sao Paulo and Sao Paulo State University, Brazil, by strengthening their existing research collaboration through the development and submission of 3 research proposals: short-, medium- and long-term addressing the following research question: 1. What are the effects of i) genet variation (host); ii) F dose and exercise (environment) on F metabolism and body retention?; 2. How does any interaction between host and environment affect F metabolism and body F retention? (AU)
