Platform for studies on marine biodiversity of the Southeastern Brazilian coast and the Antarctic region

Abstract

The use of collections of biological material and oceanographic data as forms of evaluation of changes in marine biodiversity has not been enough explored, although they are the central points that holds historical records of organisms in the environmental context in which were inserted. This project proposes to organize the biological collection of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo that represents about six decades of oceanographic research in the Brazilian coast and three decades in the Antarctic region. In addition, it is proposed implementing an information system of open access for research institutions and the scientific community in general, through a database that contextualizes the marine environment. From this organization will be possible investigations of medium-long term, which may contribute to the knowledge on marine biodiversity of the southeastern Brazilian coast and the Antarctic region, besides to providing subsidies to research issues that influence on biodiversity change over time, such as climate change, environmental impacts and bioinvasion.
