Formation and growth of intermetallics at the interface between Al-Si and Ti-6Al-4V

Abstract

The industrial demand for hybrid components has increased the necessity for joining dissimilar metallic materials. The junction between Al/Ti alloys is rather difficult due the formation of brittle intermetallic phases in the interface region, which degrades its mechanical and microstructural properties. In equilibrium conditions, the formation of interfacial phases at given temperature is related to phase diagram of the system. However, in experimental observations, the non-equilibrium is often present and the growth mechanism of the intermetallics can be affected by other conditions. Therefore, the understanding of the formation of intermetallics, their morphologies and growth mechanisms in the interface region is essential to guidance, prediction and control of process parameters. The present project aims to study the growth kinetics of the intermetallics at the interface between Al-Si and Ti-6Al-4V, considering the laser sintering of Al-Si, in different compositions, on the titanium alloy. The research will provide the correlation between the experimental data and a semi-analytical mathematical model to evaluate the influence of process parameters in the formation of the intermetallics.
