Abstract

The primary aim of this research project is to provide a critical analysis of the diplomatic relations between Brazil and Japan, focusing on the historical, economic and social aspects. The diplomatic relations between the two countries started with the signature of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation of 1895. Therefore, such an analysis is timely as 2015 marks the 120th anniversary of the Treaty and in view of the emergence of Brazil as an important global player, besides Japan's role in Asia, especially the economic and strategic impacts within the sphere of influence of these two countries. The human aspect will also be reviewed due to the importance that the Japanese immigration to Brazil and Brazilian immigration to Japan had and still have for the maintenance of relations between the two countries and also for the dissemination and exchange of knowledge and culture, bringing good prospects for the future of Japan-Brazil relations.
