Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the evolutionary relationships between the taxa currently assigned to the families Telothelepodidae and Thelepodidae, based on morphological characters. Complete diagnoses will be provided for each genus, together with full descriptions of type material of two new species and all the other 12 species previously known of the family Telothelepodidae, which are currently divided in six genera, and also for 19 of the 92 currently known species of Thelepodidae, representing all five valid genera in this family. This project will produce four papers, two of them providing diagnoses for all genera and full descriptions for all species included in the study, in coauthory with Pat Hutchings and Orlemir Carrerette, one for each family, and another two papers suggesting evolutionary hypotheses for the relationships between these species within each family, in coauthory with Pat Hutchings and Kirk Fitzhugh. Most of the study will be carried out along an one-fortnight visit of Dr Pat Hutchings to LaPol/IB-USP, for the morphological part, and an one month visit of Dr Fitzhugh, for the phylogenetic part, along the first year of the project (AU)
