Evaluation of myocardial fibrosis by cardiac magnetic resonance in risk stratification in Chagas' Disease

Abstract

This is a retrospective study including 100 individuals with a positive Chagas´ Disease serology previously submitted to Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) with myocardial fibrosis evaluation. Myocardial fibrosis will be qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated alog with several cardiac parameters such as: ventricular volumes, function and mass, cardiac chamber measurements and regional systolic dysfunction identified in tagging images. All participants´electronic and paper medical records will be reviewed in order to collect epidemiologic, echocardiographic, electrocardiographic and image data to calculate the Rassi Risk Score. Hard events such as death, reversed sudden death, heart transplantation and appropriate implantable cardiac defibrillator therapy data will be collected as well. The main goal of this study is to establish the prognostic value of myocardial fibrosis evaluated by CMR in this population. Our secondary goal is to determine if myocardial fibrosis constitutes an independent and additional risk factor compared to the Rassi Risk Score. As a substudy, we will correlate myocardial fibrosis with regional systolic dysfunction identified by tagging images.
