Abstract

The National Constituent Assembly of 1987-1988 in Brazil (ANC) was an event whose origins, formatives stages and development are yet to be adequately elucidated and understood by the academic analysis. There are three questions that guide this research proposal: (1) Why did the process of political transition in Brazil involved the convening of a constituent assembly? (2) How did the decision for a Constitutional Congress articulates with the strategies of the Democratic Alliance for the democratization of the country? (3) How to explain the constitutional design ultimately obtained, in terms of agendas of rights gestered along the transition combined with the dynamic of the works of the ANC?The focus of the research lies in the elucidation of the political choices made by the protagonists - both the oppositions and the regime forces - from institutions posed by authoritarian order, aiming a constitutional reorganization of the country. For this, we use the methodology of in-depth interviews, in order for develop an democratization memory, taking as a conductive motive the repeated demands for a constituent since the seventies. (AU)
