Abstract

With this project we intend to structure and establish a line of research whose main focus is the study and implementation of reactions to modify the polysaccharide chitosan by binding molecules with specific advantages aiming to increase the physical and chemical stability properties of lipid membranes that mimic the biological membrane. We also intend to study the application of this composite system, lipid/modified chitosan as an antioxidant product and gene transfer, as well to develop a modified chitosan gel with advantageous properties for its application. The highly interdisciplinary project will develop studies of interaction between the modified polymer and the membrane of lipids in spherical colloidal structures in the nanometer and micrometer range, respectively of liposomes and giant vesicles. Following, studies to increase the stability of the lipid membrane coated with modified chitosans will be performed using specific molecules that promote the degradation of lipids, such as with the use of photo active molecules that produce oxygen radicals under light irradiation which react with the lipids unsaturations. Next, in vitro studies will be performed with the composite system and the modified chitosan gel using specific cell lines. After, to liposomes coated with chitosan, plasmids will be incorporated aiming increasing the stability of these nucleic acids for efficient transfer to the cell nucleus with minimal toxicity. The project has a major focus in starting the scientific activities in the Institution where I have been recently hired, as well as training of students in undergraduate, master and PhD levels. (AU)
