Abstract

This project aims to analyze the different paths trodden in the incorporation of different immigrant groups in the specific context of the provinces of São Paulo between 1880 and 1950, thus helping to demonstrate the complexity of the its formation. How, in different historical junctures, affirmation processes of affirmation of identity and assimilation processes did mark the trajectories of each ethnic group (Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese and Syrian and Lebanese) in the vast region known as the West Paulista, where the coffee economy predominated? The answer to that question should be broken down according to variables that lie at the intersection of: 1) the social, economic and cultural background brought by various groups of immigrants arrived in the region; 2) the conditions of its inclusion in the new land (especially in view of the specifics of the labor market and the opportunities for mobility), both in rural areas as in urban areas; and 3) the developments related to the political and ideological contexts of each of the home nations of immigrants and Brazil, along the focused period.
