INDICATORS OF SUSTAINABILITY IN THE POLYCULTURE OF FRESHWATER PRAWN Macrobrachium rosenbergii AND LAMBARI Astyanax altiparanae

Abstract

The project will be carried out by two consecutive years in the Aquaculture Sector of the Polo Regional Paraiba Valley - APTA Regional, Pindamonhangaba (SP), using 16 ponds with 16 m2 each. The objective will be to evaluate the productive performance, the economic viability and environmental sustainability of two production systems of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii in polyculture with lambari fish (Astyanax altiparanae). In System one (first year of the project), fish will be confined in net cages (TR) and prawns will be freely reared in the ponds. The treatments will be: A - Caged fish monoculture at the density of 50 fish m-3; B - Monoculture of prawns in the ponds, at the density of 10 prawns m-2; C - Polyculture of caged fish at 50 m-3 and free prawns at 10 m-2 and D - Polyculture of caged fish at 25 m-3 and free prawns at 10 m-2. In System two (second year of project), fish and prawns will be freely reared in the pound, according to the treatments: A - Fish monoculture at 50 fish m-3; B - prawn monoculture at 10 prawns m-2; C - Polyculture of fish at 50 m-3 and prawns at 10 m-2 and D - Polyculture of fish at 25 m-3 and prawns at 10 m-2. The experimental period will be of 150 days and the results will be analyzed by completely randomized ANOVA. Performance parameters evaluated will be survival, individual mean weight and mean length, biomass, specific growth rate (SGR) and apparent feed efficiency (FCE). Environmental sustainability will be measured by the quantity and efficiency of use of resources such as nitrogen, phosphorus, water and space, beyond the health evaluation of cultivated animals. The most common indicators used in the specialized literature will evaluate economic sustainability. (AU)
